The MMA and HLAMN co-hosted a free 30-minute webinar on Dec. 3 on Minnesota's prescription drug electronic prior authorization mandate.

Effective Jan. 1, 2016, all Minnesota prescribers are required to submit, and payers are required to accept, electronic prior authorization requests for prescription drugs. Electronic prior authorization, or ePA, is an aspect of Minnesota's Electronic Prescription Drug Program law. This requirement is in line with other Minnesota initiatives intended to support data interoperability and administrative simplification throughout the health care system.

Laura Topor, president of Granada Health, LLC, informed participants about the upcoming mandate and addressed what the law requires, the rationale for the mandate, its expected advantages, potential hurdles and how to prepare for it. The webinar also provided information about how the ePA workflow works.
